Red Line

Group Exhibition -Toride Art Project 2002- / 2002 / The boundary of Toride city, Ibaraki, Japan

This is a project which takes two areas separated by the natural boundary of a river and attempts to join them through the creation of an artificial border. This border is formed by a 4km red line of long red shirts joined one to another.
As part of this work approximately 60 residents from both districts joined in a performance to “wear the shirt border”, each wearing one of these shirts to form a human chain. After the performance the 4km border remained installed for several months. This work takes the opposite action to that usually associated with an artificial border, with its negative image of division, and instead for one moment it functions as a device for furthering communication.
